Our Mission

At Okomeya, our goal is to bring exceptional Japanese rice to Australian tables and share the culture, craftsmanship, and stories behind every grain.

For generations, rice has been at the centre of Japanese cuisine and daily life. This deep connection between people, land, and food has given rise to some of the world’s most celebrated rice-growing regions and varieties.

Great rice begins in the field. It is cultivated by farmers whose knowledge has been passed down through generations, combining experience, careful attention, and a commitment to producing rice of exceptional quality.

Okomeya’s mission is not simply to supply premium Japanese rice, but to provide greater transparency about what we bring to Australian families. Wherever possible, we share information about the growing region, harvest season, milling date, and the farmers behind each crop.

About Yuiko

Hi, I’m Yuiko.

I grew up in a small country town in Hiroshima, Japan, surrounded by rice fields, mountains, and rivers. My childhood memories are tied to the rhythm of the rice-growing seasons.

In spring, tiny green seedlings were planted in flooded paddies. Through the summer, the fields became a sea of vibrant green. By autumn, the rice plants bowed under the weight of golden grain, ready for harvest. In winter, the fields rested beneath snow until the next planting season arrived.

Today, as a mother living in Melbourne with my two school-aged children, rice is at the heart of the meals we eat. For our family, a fresh bowl of rice goes just as well with Japanese curry, a simple fried fish, a stir fry or with a bowl of miso soup.

Every day I make a plain rice ball wrapped in seaweed, an onigiri, and put it in everyone’s lunchbox for school or work. On weekends, it goes in the day pack for hiking or a city adventure.

Over the past few years I’ve been searching for a way to get fresh and premium Japanese rice to Australia. My hope is to get this rice into Australian kitchens so that you can share the simple joy of these everyday meals.
